In 1987, the Mental Health Workers' Meeting took place in Bauru (São Paulo), bringing together health professionals, service users, family members, and activists.

They denounced the inhumane conditions of psychiatric hospitals and advocated for a new model of care — one that upholds patients’ freedom, dignity, and citizenship.

This moment gave rise to the Anti-Asylum Movement, which was essential to the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform and the creation of services such as the CAPS (Psychosocial Care Centers).
