Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that include deficits in social interaction, communication and behavior. The exact cause is still unknown. Based on the symptoms, food selective, food refusal and resistance to new habits will affect the ability of food consumption of children. The aim of the study was to answer the following questions: Do children with ASD have a different nutritional and behavioral profile from neurotypical children? Are the Dietician interventions able to bring benefits to improve behavior, communication and socialization status? As a method was use a systematic review. The authors produced two guiding questions, delimitated keywords, researched for papers in database, application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria and analysis of the data obtained by the papers that answered the guiding questions. The results showed 27 publications in database Pubmed, Lilacs and Capes including the keywords cross-referenced between ASD and gluten free, eating behavior, casein free, nutritional status, food selectivity, vitamin deficiency, nutritional strategy. Analysis was made in 16 papers in Pubmed, 6 papers in Lilacs and 5 papers in Capes showing a prevalence of publications in Brazil with 33.3%. Randomized clinical trials (RCT) and cross-sectional had higher percentage of methodology used. The analysis concluded that those publications with non-nutritional interventions have been effective in transgressing unsatisfactory behaviors. Also, dietary intervention combine with social/behavioral interventions is a way of improving food acceptance by circumventing food selectivity.
